How to Choose Wall Colors With Painted Trim
Choosing wall and trim colors for your home shouldn't be taken lightly. Each color combination creates a new feeling or mood for the room. Select colors that match the ambiance you're looking for. For instance, brightly contrasting colors have energy and vibrancy, whereas dark, rich colors are warm and elegant. Trim doesn't have to be the traditional white. In fact, giving trim a new color can enhance a room and give it an element of unexpected interest.

1
Select the mood you want to create. Warm, earthy tones like reds, browns and olive greens create a rich setting; cool tones like blues, grays and white create a classic, open feel; electric colors like tangerine, lime and pale pink create youthfulness and static energy; jewel color combinations like royal purple and peacock blue or bright orange and deep pink create an exotic atmosphere.

Choose trim and wall paint that are highly contrasting. Colors that are too close in shade lose their impact. If you do use colors in the same family, such as brown, choose either a much darker or much lighter brown for the walls or trim.

3
Complement your furniture by your choice of colors. Walls and trim should be an appropriate landscape for your furnishings. Bring color samples home from your local paint store to compare with your furniture.

4
Experiment with dark trim. White--or the hundreds of variations of white--is traditionally used to accent trim and doors. In a classic decor, this is still fine. However, a dark trim, such as chocolate against a creamy taupe wall, highlights a room and creates depth.

Tips & Warnings
Choose the appropriate sheen for the wall and trim. Trim should be either gloss or high gloss, whereas the wall should be either eggshell or satin. Flat paint should only be used on ceilings.
