Divorce is usually a painful event in a person's life. All too often, the paperwork is misplaced or accidentally destroyed while shredding old papers. Years later, you may need that divorce decree to get a mortgage loan or prove to a creditor that you are not responsible for your ex's current debts. If you cannot find it, you can obtain a new copy from the original court. In Yolo County, California, divorce paperwork is found in the civil division at the courthouse in Woodland.

Go to the Yolo County courthouse to the Civil Legal Process Counter. If you do not have the case number, look up the case by your name in the court index. If the decree is old, it is probably in stored in a secure off-site location. If the file is in storage, the clerk will order it. It can take up to two weeks for delivery to the courthouse.

Go back to the courthouse to pick up the decree. Call the clerk first to make sure it is there. Be sure to get a certified copy. Pay the fee, preferably in cash, and get a receipt.

Submit your request by mail if you are unable to go to the courthouse. Send a letter that includes the case number, your name, your ex's name, the date of the divorce and a request for a certified copy of the divorce decree. Also include your name, address and telephone number in case the clerk has questions. The check must be made out to the Superior Court of California, County of Yolo, and sent with a self-addressed, stamped envelope. Write "not to exceed $35 dollars" on the memo line of your check.
