Mouth Guard Instructions

Using a mouth guard is a requirement in football to avoid injuries to a player's teeth. The mouth guard is often attached to the player's helmet to keep him from choking or losing it. The mouth guard, made of durable plastic to adhere to the contours of the player's teeth, requires a variety of steps to make it ready for use. Once the mouth guard is softened and as the player gets used to it, it may become second nature to the player during practice or games.

Instructions

    • 1

Bring the water to a full boil in a pot big enough to allow the mouth guard to be fully immersed. Fill a second container with cold water and place it nearby.

    • 2

Put the mouth guard into the boiling water for 30 seconds, then remove it with a metal spoon or tongs. Quickly dip it into the cold-water container for one second. The boiling water will make the mouth guard pliable, while the cold water will cool it to allow placement in your mouth.

    • 3

Place the mouth guard against the roof of your mouth. Secure it by pressing your tongue on the back of the guard against the roof of your mouth. Use your thumbs to press it gently against your upper teeth. Bite softly and suck all of the excess water from the guard, then let it sit in your mouth for 30 seconds. This will form a tight fit.

    • 4

Remove the mouth guard and put it in the cold-water container. If you don't have a tight fit, repeat Steps 1 through 3.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the mouth guard is too big, shorten it by using scissors to cut along the guard's rib marks.

  • Keep the mouth guard clean by washing it regularly.

  • If you have a strap attached, you can connect the guard to your helmet to ensure that you don't lose it.
