How to Break in a Baseball Glove Without Oil

How to Break in a Baseball Glove Without Oil thumbnail
A brand new glove may look nice, but it doesn't feel good on your hand.

New baseball gloves look and smell good, but playing baseball with them can be difficult. The leather is often very stiff and there is no room to hold a ball. Your hands will tire quickly in a new glove. If you do manage to catch a ball, it might slip right out due to the lack of a "pocket." There are several ways to quickly break in a new glove without using expensive oils, which can actually deteriorate your glove by saturating it.

Instructions

    • 1

Apply a handful of shaving cream to a dry washcloth. The cream must be thick, white and foamy--do not use gel. Rub the washcloth together to get an even coating of shaving cream all over it.

    • 2

Rub the washcloth all over the glove, paying attention to the seams. The shaving cream makes it smell good and softens the leather at the same time. Do not overly saturate the glove with shaving cream.

    • 3

Let the glove sit in a dark, dry place overnight to dry out completely.

    • 4

Place a baseball inside the glove's pocket to help it form around the ball. Tie a thick rubberband around it to hold it closed.

    • 5

Place the baseball glove with the ball inside it under your mattress.

    • 6

Lay on the glove every night for a week to create a ball shape inside the pocket.

    • 7

Start playing baseball with the glove. Using a glove frequently will help break it in.

Tips & Warnings

  • Place a baseball in your glove and tie it closed with a thick rubber band when you are not using it.

  • Do not bake your glove in an oven or microwave.
