How to Remove the Rubber Smell From Floor Mats
Rubber has a very strong odor, especially when it is new. If you purchased a set of rubber floor mats for your car, you will want to remove the rubber smell before you set them inside of the car. Otherwise, the inside of car will begin to smell like rubber. You can use common household products to get rid of the rubber odor. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- 1 cup warm water
- 1 cup ammonia
- 1/2 cup vinegar
- 1/4 cup baking soda
- Small bucket
- Rag

Place 1 cup of warm water, 1 cup of ammonia, 1/2 cup of vinegar, and 1/4 cup of baking soda in a small bucket and stir to combine. In addition to their cleaning abilities, ammonia, vinegar and baking soda are all also capable of removing strong odors.

Set your rubber mats in a bathtub. Dip a rag in the bucket and use the homemade solution to wipe down the rubber mats.

Rinse the mats off with water from the bathtub faucet.

Set the rubber mats out in the sun to dry. The sun has natural oxidizing agents, and will also get rid of any leftover rubber smells.

Tips & Warnings
You can also wash your rubber floor mats with a pine scented cleaner. Make sure you dilute the pine cleaner in water before you use it to wipe down your floor mats.

Not sure about the vinegar (acid) and baking soda (alkaline) - from basic chemistry we know that they will chemically react and neutralise each other. Have one or the other but not both... Like mixing a bleach compound with ammonia - they chemically react to produce a toxic chlorine gas!
