Read the tape measure by recognizing that one inch is broken down into smaller units of measure. The smallest unit is 1/16 of an inch, followed by 1/8 of an inch, then 1/4 of an inch, and finally 1/2 of an inch. Each unit of measure is indicated by a hash mark. The 1/8 inch mark represents an 1/8 of an inch, but it also signifies 2/16 of an inch. Therefore, the smaller mark to the right of the 1/8-inch mark is 3/16 of an inch.

    • 2

Look at the tape measure and note that there is a scale between the inch marks. The tape measure is divided into 1/16-inch units, represented by lines of varying lengths. The longest line (between the inch lines) marks 1/2 an inch, the next longest marks a 1/4 inch, followed by shorter ones marking 1/8 inch and 1/16 inch.

    • 3

Memorize the distance that each mark represents between the inch marks. Every eighth line indicates 1/2 an inch; every fourth line marks a 1/4 inch, every second line represents an 1/8 of an inch, and every first line marks a 1/16 of an inch. Usually the markings for feet are larger or with color.

Measure the smallest mark possible for maximum accuracy. The top portion of the tape measure divides into standard measurements of inches, feet and yards. Some tape measures mark inches with large numerals, and others mark feet with red numerals. Always measure twice to make sure that the measurement is accurate.
