How to Design a Barbie Room

Design a young child's room after a favorite toy.

When designing a room for a young child, you want to think not of your aesthetic values but of the child's favorite toys, animals or colors. The child's personality should be what organizes and informs your interior design, as it is she who will spend the most time there. Even if your sense of style clashes with the child's, you will make the child's day by truly devoting a room to her favorite things, such as Barbie dolls.

Things You'll Need

• Paper
• Interior decorating or home magazine
• Barbie catalog
• Pencil
• Scissors
• Paint chips
• Binder

Instructions

1. Look at examples of Barbie's wardrobe and own play house as displayed in toy catalogs. Take note of the color scheme. Look for paint chips at a hardware store that match the colors you see in the catalog to determine not only the colors you can paint the wall and trim but also color schemes for bedding, shelving and furniture.

2. Look through interior decorating or home magazines for examples of room decor that fit with the styles you see in the Barbie catalog. Look for elements that seem doll-like or girlish, such as overstuffed chairs, furniture or pillows that appear miniaturized, bright solid colors mixed with floral designs or items adorned with false gemstone detailing. Cut out items you see that fit this description.

3. Compile your inspirational material in a binder to keep everything together.

4. Draw a sketch of the room and block out the areas where you will put a bed and any additional furniture. Make a list of the items you will need to find, based on your sketch.

5. Bring your source materials with you when you eventually go out to find the items you have designed for the room.
