How to Refill a Butane Torch

How to Refill a Butane Torch thumbnail
Butane torches need refilling to work properly.

A butane torch is a tool used for quick lighting of candles, grills and fires. In addition to regular maintenance, a butane torch needs to be properly refilled to work correctly. If the torch sparks and the hiss of fuel can be heard when the ignite button is pressed, the torch is working properly. There are many types of butane refillers, and all butane torches today use triple-refined butane fuel. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the flame adjuster all the way to low by turning it clockwise. Depending on your model, this can be done by hand or may require a small screwdriver.

    • 2

Drain any remaining fuel and air from the lighter in a well ventilated area or outside because remaining fuel will be in the form of a gas. Drain by placing a small screwdriver in the inlet valve on the bottom of the can.

    • 3

Place the torch upside down and press the stem of the refill can into the inlet valve. Fill the torch with the amount of fuel designated by the manufacturer. Do not overfill as it can cause the tank to rupture.

    • 4

Let the torch rest for 15 to 20 minutes to allow the fuel to reach room temperature. The refilling process cools the fuel and for safety reasons should be warmed before use.

    • 5

Turn the flame adjuster a half turn counter-clockwise and attempt to light the torch. If it doesn't work after a few seconds, adjust another quarter turn and try again. Continue adjusting until the torch lights.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the lighter is having trouble igniting, use compressed air to blow into the flame mechanism to remove dust and dirt. Compressed air can be purchased at home improvement and computer stores.

  • Keep steady pressure when refilling. Do not pump the fuel can into the torch while refilling--this can cause the tank to rupture.
