Instructions

    • 1

Place the metal files on the bench and then find a 5/32-inch and a 7/32-inch file. You will be using one of these sizes to sharpen the chains.

    • 2

Determine the type of pitch you have for the chain on your chainsaw. Chains can come in pitches that can range from ¼-inch to 3/8-inch diameters.

    • 3

Place the chainsaw on the bench and make sure that it is sitting steady. Brace the chainsaw with blocks of wood, if necessary to keep it from moving. Alternatively, you can place the arm of the chainsaw into a bench vice.

    • 4

Measure the pitch of the links on your chainsaw with a ruler. If the measurement is ¼ of an inch the 5/32-inch file is needed. If the measurement is 3/8 of an inch the 7/32-inch file is needed.

    • 5

Place a file guide over a link on the chainsaw. Set the file on the guide and align it with the marks that are provided.

    • 6

Hold the file with both of your hands and then move the file from the inside to the outside. Only go in one direction and do not pull the file back towards the inside. Repeat this step five or six times or until the chain is sharp.

    • 7

Repeat steps five and six to sharpen the remaining links on the chainsaw.

Tips & Warnings

  • Consult the owners manual for your chainsaw to verify the correct file diameter for the sharpener.

  • Wear leather gloves to avoid cutting your hands when sharpening the chains.

  • Some 3/8 inch profile chains may require using a 3/6-inch diameter file.
