How to Maximize New Windows

When you open new windows on your PC, the windows usually open at the full size of your computer monitor. By design, Internet Explorer and File Explorer windows in Microsoft operating systems remember the size when you closed the last window, and opens new windows at that size. While this is a useful feature, if you want to set your window size smaller than your full screen, it creates an extra step if you intended to open the new window at its maximized size. You can force new windows to open maximized by manually resizing a window and closing it.

Instructions

    • 1

Open a new window on your computer by selecting the program from your computer’s desktop or the “Start” menu. Move your mouse pointer to the square box icon at the upper-right corner of the window. This box should be just to the left of the "X" icon to close to the window.

    • 2

Click the square box icon to maximize the page to the full width and height of your monitor.

    • 3

Click the “X” icon in the upper right-hand corner of the new window to close it. When you open the window again, it will open maximized.

Tips & Warnings

  • You also can click and drag the window to the full size available on your computer screen by pointing your mouse pointer to any corner of the window and dragging it until it fills your screen. When you close the window and reopen it, the new window should be at the size you left it.
