Ingest valerian root to help treat insomnia, stress, headaches and nervousness. Valerian is commonly used in pill and tea form.

Buy herbal pills made from valerian root. Holistic and mainstream stores carry valerian root herbal pills and supplements, which can be taken orally as a stress reliever and sleep aid.

Take valerian root pills orally with water or milk. Valerian root should be taken two hours to 30 minutes before going to sleep.

Store valerian root pills out of direct sunlight at room temperature. Keep the pills away from extreme heat or cold.

Dig up an entire, mature valerian plant with a hand shovel to use the roots as an ingredient for tea.

Cut the roots away from the foliage of the plant using a sharp kitchen knife. Slice the roots into small pieces. Do not crush the roots to retain their moisture.

Fill a large glass or small kettle with two cups of lukewarm water. Add 2 tsp. of the chopped valerian root to the water and let it stand for 12 to 24 hours.

Strain the water with a fine strainer. Add 1 tsp. of honey and heat the tea before drinking.
