How to Remove Smoke Stains From Walls
Small fires, exhaust fumes, heavy smoking and candles can all cause smoke stains to appear on the walls of a room; they are unsightly and can leave a strong odor. It’s important that you immediately ventilate your home and then quickly remove the stain. After the stain has been removed you should also make sure that the smoke stain odor is gone from the area. - Electric fans
- Safety goggles
- Rubber gloves
- Towels
- Cloth
- Rubbing alcohol
- Bucket
- Liquid laundry detergent
- Sponges
- Stepping stool

Open all windows in your home. Turn on any ceiling fans or electric fans that you have to keep the area well ventilated.

Wear rubber gloves and safety goggles before removing any of the smoke stains on the walls. Lay down an old cleaning towel on the floor below the area where the smoke stain is located on the wall.

Rub the smoke stain with a dry sponge to rub off any soot. Wash the soot covered sponge in cool running water and the let it dry out again.

Rub the area with a wet cloth until the black stain is fully removed; you can also apply rubbing alcohol to the cloth for stains that are hard to get out.

Fill a large bucket with warm water and at least 1 cup of liquid laundry detergent. Mix the water and detergent until it’s soapy.

Soak a dry cleaning sponge in the bucket and then wipe the area of the smoke stain on the wall. Use a stepping stool for reaching high areas.

Use a dry towel to absorb any moisture that remains on the walls. Continue to keep the room well ventilated and repeat cleaning the area with water and detergent if the smell persists.
