Rustic Modern Decorating
Rustic style decorating finds its roots in the log cabins of our European and American ancestors. This style of decorating features casual furniture and accessories. The feel of the modern rustic home is that of the cozy ski lodge with all the amenities. In some regards, this style is no set style at all. Rather, it is a collection of items in one room that look like they were constructed from materials from the woods. However, even with these rustic touches, you can still add a few modern pieces here and there because of the style’s eclectic character. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Paint the room in question in rustic colors. This style embraces a back-to-nature sensibility, so hues like beige, brown, rust, dark green or deep reds work well for this.
-
2
Look for furniture pieces that feature exposed wood. This can be branch or log style as well as plank. Gravitate toward fabrics like leather, denim or cottons with plaid designs.
-
-
3
Fill tall glass containers full of acorns, pine cones and colorful pebbles. Place these on a fireplace mantel, coffee table or your dining table.
-
4
Make floral arrangements using pretty branches like pussy willows or Aspens. Add dried seed pods, decorative grasses and silk maple leaves in fall colors. Place them in bright pottery, such as antique pottery like Fiestaware or Roseville. You can position these on your fireplace hearth in groups of three or in a bare corner of the room that needs a bit of sprucing up.
-
5
Decorate your bookshelves with pictures framed with twig frames, leather bound books and bronze animal sculptures or bookends. Leave the bottom few shelves free to store handmade country quilts that you can pull out on cold nights.
-
6
Put together some curtain rods fashioned from branches. Clean the branches and paint them off-white or in a contrasting color to the one on your walls. Look for fabric featuring antique bird prints or the harvest to make the curtains.
-
7
Choose interesting pieces for the room that reflect the rustic motif, like bookshelves shaped like boats, antique fishing baskets, mounted antlers or shadow boxes featuring an antique pipe collection.
-
8
Decorate your walls with antique bird and animal prints. You can choose framed replicas of old advertising illustrations or you can head to an antique store and look for old country ads. Frame these in twig and wooden frames and create a gallery. If you’d like to add a bit of variation to your wall, hang the pictures on thick ribbon and suspend from a branch similar to your curtain rod.
-
9
Place pumpkins, gourds, silk maple leaves and candles on your fireplace mantel. Add bottles of wine featuring country-style art on the labels.
