1
Determine the type of kayak that is best for your kayaking needs. For example, if you will be kayaking for long periods of time in the wilderness, you may want a touring kayak. If you plan to ride a lot of waves, a whitewater kayak may be best for you.

Select the right size for the type of kayaking you plan to do. If you are looking for a kayak that is easy to turn and maneuver, you want a kayak that is 12 feet or less. If you want a kayak that is more stable on strong currents, choose a wide kayak.

Determine what type of hull shape will meet your needs. There are three shapes for the kayak bottom: flat, round and v-shaped.
The flat shape will allow more stability on the water, but it will be slower and more difficult to paddle. The round shape will go faster than the flat bottom, but it is harder to keep the round kayak upright in the water. The v-shaped kayak makes it easier for you to paddle in a straight line. The v-shaped kayak goes faster than the flat bottom and offers more stability than the round bottom.

Set a budget. A kayak can cost anywhere from $200 to several thousand dollars, depending upon the make, model and material. A plastic kayak is the cheapest. Polyethylene kayaks are the most popular.

Visit a kayak store. Locate a kayak that meets all of your specifications. Test drive the kayak by renting it for a day. If you like the way the kayak handles during the test drive, buy it. Some kayak stores will deduct your rental fees from the total price of the kayak.

Tips & Warnings
By purchasing your kayak off-season, in July or August, you may be able to get a significant discount. This is because retailers will be clearing out the old kayaks to make room for the new.
