How to Clean Black Mold From a Carpet

Black mold is considered more than a mere nuisance; it has the potential to cause health problems. Cleaning black mold off porous items such as carpet can be a difficult job. However, it is not impossible. When cleaning black mold from carpet, you must remove the mold, disinfect the area and remove all traces of moisture.

Things You'll Need

  • Wet-dry vacuum
  • Water
  • 2 buckets
  • Distilled white vinegar
  • Wooden spoon
  • Liquid dish soap
  • Sponge
  • Cloth
  • Fans
  • Dehumidifier
  • Remove water soaked into the carpet, using a wet-dry vacuum.

  • Mix together 1 gallon of warm water and 2 cups of distilled white vinegar. Add a few drops of liquid dish soap. Use a wooden spoon to combine the contents.

  • Submerge a sponge in the mixture and wring out the excess liquid.

  • Scrub the carpet gently with the sponge. Scrub in a back-and-forth motion until all traces of the black mold are gone. Work in small sections at a time. Start at the area of the carpet farthest away from the entrance and work toward it.

  • Fill a clean bucket with cool water. Submerge a clean cloth in the water and wring out the excess.

  • Blot the carpet with the cloth to rinse the area. Allow the carpet to air-dry. Point fans in the direction of the carpet to aid in the drying process.

  • Place a dehumidifier on a level location in the room. Dehumidifiers remove the moisture from the air, which reduces the chance of mold growth.
