How to Create a Backup DHCP Server

How to Create a Backup DHCP Server thumbnail
Set up a backup of your DHCP server.

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is a server protocol that allows you to automatically assign IP addresses to computers on your network. A DHCP server makes it easier for network administrators to add a new computer to the network, since no IP addresses need assignment. You create a backup DHCP server by saving DHCP settings to a file. If the server fails, this file is imported and used until the main server is restored.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the Windows "Start" button and select "Programs." Click "Administrative Tools" and then click "DHCP Server." This opens the main configuration console for your DHCP server.

    • 2

Click the plus sign next to the "DHCP" icon on the left side of the configuration window. This expands a list of DHCP server scopes. Click the plus sign next to your DHCP server name you want to back up.

    • 3

Right-click your server scope and select "Backup." This opens a new window where you configure the backup file.

    • 4

Enter a name for your backup file and a location where it stores on the server. By default, the file name is saved in the "DHCP" folder in the "System32" directory. Click "OK" to complete the backup and store it on your server.
