Opening a small business in Texas requires several steps. You must first decide on the type of business, register the business name, apply for an Employer Identification Number, find the business location, open banking accounts and prior to opening the business, you must apply for a Texas business license. Texas offers an online portal, allowing you to register for your business license and renew your business license.

1. Visit the Texas.gov website. Review the page layout carefully. The Texas website offers many business resources, including registering for your business license and renewing your licenses.

2. Look to the right side of the screen and under a blue tab, you will see a listing of professions that require a business license. Double click on the area your business falls under to pull up a list of other related businesses.

3. Select the business you have and double click the title. This will bring you to the registration page. Review the eligibility requirements and fill out the registration form completely. You will be required to fill out your business information as well as your personal information.

4. Select your payment method and enter payment information. Submit the application. Print the receipt and application. Pay close attention to any information listed with additional items or requests needed to fully process the application. If you are in a profession that requires a certification or degree to operate, you will be required to mail in proof. Directions will be included on your receipt.

5. Contact your local Texas business office if you do not see your business listed (see Resources). Not all businesses require a business license, but you should confirm this with a live person.
