Take high school courses in subjects such as math, mechanical drawing, electronics and physics, which will prepare you for post-secondary training in this industry. You’ll need a high school diploma or pass a GED (General Educational Development) test to get into a training program for locksmiths. Although some car locksmiths learn on the job, employers prefer individuals who have some post-secondary education.

Look for professional locksmithing programs at community colleges or technical/vocational schools that include teaching you how to work in the specialized area of automotive locksmithing. These certificate programs usually last about two semesters. Such educational programs often cover multiple aspects of the professional locksmithing trade, with auto locksmithing as just one component of the training. Be prepared to take four or five courses during your training program. Study general information about lock mechanisms, and practice how to tell the difference among various types of locks and their manufacturers so you can master how to open different locks. Also, learn how to duplicate and make impressions of keys, as well as manage panic hardware and security systems. Study how to operate key machines; learn the locksmithing code of ethics. In addition, be prepared to take examinations and complete practical exercises that test your knowledge of car locksmithing skills.

Prepare to pass a comprehensive examination based on your training to obtain a license in states that require one. Otherwise, seek voluntary certification in this field through ALOA, which makes you more competitive in the job market. Become a Certified Automotive Locksmith by passing the certification exam in this special designation area.

Participate in workshops and professional development opportunities offered by employers or training programs to gain more knowledge about changing trends in the locksmithing field. Also, take advantage of online training workshops on advanced topics that the ALOA offers (see Resources). You'll also need to meet re-certification requirements every three years to maintain your designation. This involves completing educational courses or volunteer leadership opportunities in locksmith associations.
