How to Calculate the Price of New Roof Tiles

Roofing your home can be a long and tiring task, especially if you are unprepared. Having ample tools, time and materials are crucial to completing the job efficiently. In addition to these necessities, under or over estimating the amount of tiles needed to re-roof your home can take away precious finances and time. Calculating the required number of roofing tiles needed for the house is the first step in finishing the project.

Things You'll Need

  • Paper
  • Pencil
  • Ladder
  • Tape measure
  • Calculator
  • Select one slope at a time. Climb the ladder with the tape measure and begin to measure the width, then the length. Write down the measurements in the format 10 x 10 to keep the measurement separate from other measurements.

  • Choose another slope, climbing down the ladder and moving to the selected slope if necessary. Climb back up, take your length and width measurements, then write them down in the same format as before. Continue until the entire roof is measured.

  • Multiply the width by the length, to get the square footage. For example, if one slope was 10 x 10, you have 100 square feet. Continue with all of your slope measurements, then add the final numbers together. This number is the total square feet of tiles needed to set the roof.

  • Contact a reputable dealer or search the company's website for a calculator and pricing. The tiles are sold in boxes with a certain amount of square feet, such as 100 square feet, therefore you may need to purchase a little extra to get the amount needed. Purchasing extra tiles can be good though, since mistakes in calculation are inevitable.

  • Calculate your cost. First, if your total roof is 1250 square feet, for example, divide that by the 100 square feet of tile in each box and you get a total of 12.5 boxes. This means you should buy 13 boxes. If each box is $30, per se, multiply 30 by 13 and you can expect to pay around $390.

Tips & Warnings

  • It is always helpful to have a second person write down the measurements as you call them out from above. The prices and measurements are only for discussion and should not be taken literally. The final price of your roof tiles depends on the dealer you use and the material you purchase.
