How to Properly Measure a Lamp for a Shade

1. Write down the height of the lamp—you will need it while shopping. Measure it from the bottom of the base to the top of the socket, which is where you screw in the light bulb.

2. Choose the lampshade with your lamp in mind. A table lamp would look unbalanced with a large lampshade more appropriate for a floor lamp.

3. Complement the lamp with the right type of shade. If the base of your lamp is decorative, the lampshade you select should be simple and unobtrusive. If the base is plain, you can choose a shade with a pattern or texture.

4. Measure the bottom diameter of the lampshade you are considering while in the store. The diameter should be approximately the same height as the lamp, according to the Lamps USA website.
