How to Design a Music Themed Room
A music-themed room can be a music lover's retreat or just an interesting themed room in your home. If anyone in your family studies a musical instrument, a music room will have more than sentimental value: It can serve as a practice studio. Music is a popular decorative theme for the teen or tween who's always got an MP3 player around her neck. You can create a music themed room by adding a few touches to an existing room, or get comprehensive with an entire room decorated entirely with musical elements.

Plan the extent of your decorating. If you've got the resources and the desire to go all out and decorate from the bottom up, choose selected wall coverings, furnishings and decorative items based on your theme. A classic bust of Beethoven for a romantic music buff or a classical piano student can add an old-school focal point. For an international look, acquire ocarinas, wooden flutes and other inexpensive folk instruments. These decorations can also serve as useful additions to a rootsy jam session. If you're simply adding a theme to an existing room and don't want a complete renovation, select a few musical themed items—a keyboard-themed throw rug or lampshade for a piano enthusiast, for example—to the extent your budget will allow.

Hang music themed posters, framed sheet music or oversized musical notes made of painted wood. If you're decorating a teen or tween room, hang used CDs from the ceiling with fishing line for a funky disco look, or attach them to the wall as a border. Posters of the teen's favorite musical artist complete the atmosphere.

Place an old or replica instrument on a stand for a focal point in a corner. Accent a room with blankets or pillows decorated with the treble clef symbol, a crocheted rug of musical notes or even black-and-white tiles arranged in a musical note pattern. Specialty furniture dealers sell items in the shape of musical instruments, such as a cello-shaped coffee table.
