DIY Subwoofer Cables
Subwoofer cables are used when connecting powered subwoofers to home theater receivers. The cables are constructed with an RCA connection on each end, with a two-conductor cable carrying the preamp-level signal from the receiver to the subwoofer. While you can purchase ready-made subwoofer cables, you can also make your own, which may be an option you'll want to explore if you need to create a cable of a specific length.
Things You'll Need
- Insulated, two-conductor cable
- Wire cutters
- Wire strippers
- Two male RCA plugs
- Soldering iron
Instructions
-
-
1
Cut a length of two-conductor insulated cable to the length you desire for your cable. There's no right length--it depends on your application.
-
2
Cut away two inches of the outer sheath of insulation surrounding the two inner conductors of the cable at both ends of the cable.
-
-
3
Remove 1/2 inch of insulation from each of the conductors in the cable, using your wire strippers.
-
4
Remove the outer jackets of your RCA plugs by twisting them to the left to unscrew. Slide the jackets onto the cable with the threaded end facing towards the end of the cable.
-
5
Solder the bare end of the wire with red insulation onto the center post on the back of one of your RCA plugs. Solder the black wire onto the outer tab of the RCA plug. Slide the jacket over the solder joints and tighten it onto the plug.
-
6
Solder the second plug onto the other end of the cable.
