The Black & Decker Digital Advantage Iron--named for its large digital display that changes to reflect temperature, steam and iron settings--uses an automatic cleaning system to remove dirt, scale (mineral deposits) and other debris from the steam vents. As a result, the use of a scale removal product is unnecessary. Instead, to clean your Digital Advantage you should wipe clean the exterior as needed and turn on the Auto Clean system at least once a month.
Things You'll Need
- Non-softened tap water
- Bottled water (optional)
- Mild detergent
- Lint-free microfiber cloths
- Large, deep basin (optional)
Turn off your Black & Decker Digital Advantage iron and unplug it. If recently used and still hot, wait for the iron to cool completely.
Fill a sink with water and enough mild detergent to make the water soapy. Swish a microfiber cloth in the water, remove the cloth and squeeze out any excess water, and then wipe the exterior of your Digital Advantage—handle, body, cord (excluding plug) and soleplate—with the slightly soapy, damp cloth. Rinse the surfaces with a non-soapy, damp microfiber cloth and then wipe dry with a dry microfiber cloth.
Flip up the water-fill cover and fill the water tank with non-softened tap or bottled water to a level just below the "MAX" line mark. Close the water-fill cover.
Plug in your iron, turn the "Fabric Select" dial to the "7" setting and set the iron on its heel rest to heat. When the iron beeps and “READY" appears on the display unplug the iron.
Hold the iron over the sink or a large, deep basin made of a heat-resistant material with the soleplate pointing down and press down on the "AUTO CLEAN" button on the left side of the iron near the front to start the steam-cleaning cycle. Continue pushing down on the button until the water tank empties. When you no longer see any steam, shake the iron slightly to force any remaining water from the tank out of the vents.
Stop pushing the button when you no longer see any water.
Place the iron on its heel rest and plug it in again. Run the iron over a clean microfiber cloth three or four times to wipe away any residue clinging to the soleplate or vents. When finished, place the iron on its heel rest again and wait approximately two minutes for it to generate enough heat to dry up any remaining moisture.
Shut off and unplug your iron again, wait for it to cool and then store in an upright position with the cord coiled.
Tips & Warnings
- Use non-softened tap or bottled water to clean your iron, as water from a home softener system can damage your Black & Decker Digital Advantage.
- Never wipe the iron exterior with a sopping wet cloth, as dripping water can damage the iron.
- Cleaning your iron with vinegar, abrasive cleansers or tools and harsh chemicals can damage it.
