How to Update a CV Format


As your education and career experience expand, you will likely need to update your curriculum vitae (CV) or resume to reflect the change. A resume is a one- or two-page document summarizing your professional and educational experience. A CV can be between two and five pages long and provides more details about your experiences. CVs are usually used in the research, academic and writing professions. CVs are written to present the information you want employers to see first and to focus on. This could be your experience in a certain field or a list of skills you have acquired from various jobs, for example.

  • Change the latest version of your CV to one that reflects your current career needs and goals. Choose a format that best showcases your experience and education. For example, you may change the format of your CV from one that clearly shows off your educational background when you graduated from college to one that summarizes your experiences in different jobs, also known as the skills format. Another option is to use the chronological format, which lists all your positions from the most recent to the earliest.

  • Use brief skills summaries for each position if you choose to put your CV’s emphasis on your professional experiences. Use short, key word phrases that describe the skills you used and developed in those jobs. Choose active verbs to demonstrate your achievements in the more detailed explanatory sections of your CV.

  • Add to and rearrange categories in your CV that describe your experiences. For example, list any new awards or accomplishments related to the position for which you are applying. Provide explanatory details to demonstrate the relevance of your achievements and experience.

  • Place education as your CV's first section. Include your professional experience, any specialized training, publications, community service, and honors or awards. Rearrange these categories, and tailor them to fit your CV's recipient(s) and the information you want to emphasize.

  • Delete any extra bullet points, highlighting, shading or inconsistent fonts from your CV. These detract from the essence of your CV. Replace them with simple lines of text, easy-to-follow headlines and summaries, and a standard font.
