How to Weave a Flower Crown

How to Weave a Flower Crown thumbnail
Daisies' sturdy stems work well for weaving a flower crown.

Flower crowns let children feel like fairies or springtime spirits. Make these crowns out of fresh flowers, using flowers that you have permission to pick. Look for single blooms on thornless stems of medium thickness. Varieties of daisies work well. The fresh crown does not last long, but children can enjoy them for one fairytale afternoon.

Instructions

    • 1

Make a half-inch slit 2 inches down from the head of a daisy, cutting the slit with a sharp knife parallel to the stem. Position the slit in the center of the stem.

    • 2

Cut off the end of the daisy stem 1 inch below the slit.

    • 3

Repeat the first two steps with another daisy.

    • 4

Insert the stem end of one daisy into the slit of the other, pulling the stem through so the flower head stops at the slit and rests in place.

    • 5

Continue to link the daisies until you have a chain that is long enough to wrap around the top of a child's head plus two extra daisy lengths.

    • 6

Weave the ends of the chain together, twining one end around the other as if you are making a wreath.

    • 7

Tie a small ribbon around the point where the ends are woven together for added security.

Tips & Warnings

  • Adult help is necessary for using the sharp knife. Slit the stems ahead of time to create a more independent craft for a child. Thinner-stemmed varieties can be slit with a fingernail, but they are not as durable, produce smaller crowns, and there is a larger margin for error when using a fingernail.
