How to Knit Beanie Hats

How to Knit Beanie Hats thumbnail
Knitting a beanie is a good beginner's project.

Knitted beanies are the perfect winter accessory, keeping head and ears from the biting cold. While knitting is usually the domain of grandmas, knitting a beanie in your favorite colors, or your favorite sports team’s colors, can bring the "cool" back into knitting. Knitting a beanie is one of the most elementary of knitting projects, requiring only one type of stitch for the most basic of styles.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

  1. Casting On

    • 1

Tie a slip knot in the end of your yarn, and place it over one of your needles. Place the knot 3/4 of an inch away from the point of the needle (needle A), then insert the point of the other needle (needle B) through the slip knot, but underneath needle A, to form a ‘X’ with the needle ends.

    • 2

Loop the yarn around needle B from front to back, then push needle B back through the original slip knot, pulling the looped yarn through to make a second loop. Take this loop off needle B and put it on needle A, so there are two loops over needle A.

    • 3

Repeat this process so that you have around 60 stitches (loops) on needle A. These are the required initial number of stitches to make an adult-size beanie.

    Knitting

    • 4

Insert needle B through the front of the loop closest to the end of the knitting needle on needle A, and repeat the casting on stitch, only this time, leave the stitch on needle B.

    • 5

Insert needle B a second time into the end loop, and again make a stitch, leaving the loop on needle B, so there are two loops on needle B. Repeat this for the whole 60 loops, so that all of the loops are now on needle B.

    • 6

Change hands so that needle B is now where needle A was. Insert needle A into the loop, and repeat the stitches. Keep this pattern going, until you have knitted around 10 rows of stitches (or about five inches in height). You will now have to start dropping stitches, in order to make the beanie come to a point at the top.

    • 7

Knit five stitches normally, then knit two together. Again, knit five stitches, and then two together, until that row is complete. On the next row, knit four stitches, then two together, and repeat along the entire row. The next row will be three stitches then two together; the row after that will be knit two stitches then two together; one stitch then two together, and the final row will be knitting two stitches together all the way along.

    • 8

Cut the yarn so there is a 5-inch tail left. Thread this on your needle, then pull the needle and yarn through all of the final stitches. Pull the thread off the needle and tie it off to secure the knitting. Thread your needle with a new length of yarn, tie an knot in the end. Fold the beanie pieces in half, with the "wrong" side of the knitting facing outwards. Make sure the two sides of the beanie meet, then sew up the sides. Turn the beanie right side out, so the seam is now on the inside, and your knitted beanie is complete.
