How to Fix Laser Discs

Fix scratches and problems you have with a laser disc.

A laser disc is a video format that resembles a compact disc but is roughly the size of a record. Due to the large size and high cost, the format never took off as a mainstream product. If you own a laser disc player and a few of the movie discs, however, you must clean and fix any damage to the discs. If you don't, the laser disc is not going to play properly--or at all.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any dust or hair from the disc. This is done either just by blowing gently on the laser disc or by shooting a few shots of compressed air.

    • 2

Rub the laser disc with a damp cloth from the inner ring of the disc to the outer ring. This cleans off dirt and other debris stuck to the device. Do not clean the disc in a circular motion because this pushes the debris into the small holes of the laser disc.

    • 3

Apply a small amount of pan polish to a scratch on the laser disc. (The area must first be damp.) Let the polish sit for a few minutes, and then rub the area clean with a damp cloth. This buffs out the scratch on the laser disc and makes it playable. Allow the disc to air-dry.
