How to Make Moravian Star Tree Topper Decorations
The Moravian star is sometimes referred to as the German star or the origami star, among other names, though technically the Moravian star is just one of many stars that can be created in origami. The Moravian star falls under a category of origami known as “strip folding,” because it utilizes strips of paper as opposed to larger sheets. If you have dabbled in origami at all, you already know the basic aspects of creating a Moravian star tree topper. For beginners, the Moravian star may be a little bit of a challenge.

1
Cut a piece of paper into four strips of equal size. Fold each of the strips in half so that they are half the length. At the end of the folder strip where the loose ends are, not where the fold is, cut the ends so that they are at a 45-degree angle.
-
2
Pick up one of the folded strips and hold it horizontally with the loose ends pointing toward the left. Slide a second folded strip over the middle of the first, fold side up, so that the first strip is inside of it. Slide a third strip over the second strip, pointing in the opposite direction from the first strip, and then slide the last strip over the third strip, with the folded end at the bottom and the loose ends pointing up. Push the loose ends of the last strip through the fold of the first strip. The loose, diagonal ends of each strip should be pointing in a different direction with all of the diagonal cuts facing the same way.

3
Push the folded ends of the strips, where they intersect, in toward the middle. When finished, the folded ends should all touch and form a solid square in the center.
-
4
Fold down only the front half of the upward-pointing strip, so that it crosses over the horizontal strip below it. Fold the front half of the strip that you crossed back over the strip you just folded down. Fold the front half of the downward-pointed strip up over the strip you just folded across. Fold the front half of the strip that you haven’t touched yet back over the strip you just folded up, and stick the end of the strip through the loop that has formed in the center of the design. Each side now has two strips that lie side by side.
-
5
Take the leftmost down-pointing strip and fold it to the left so that it is just below the two left-pointing strips. Then, fold the same strip upward so that it is directly beside the leftmost upward-pointing strip. Fold the strip one more time, this time vertically so that it lies directly on top of the leftmost upward-pointing strip.
-
6
Rotate the design to the right so that the right-pointing strips are now at the bottom. Repeat the process of folding the strip to the left, upward and over onto the top left strip. Rotate and repeat the process two more times until all of the sides have been folded.
-
7
Flip the design over so that you are looking at the back. Fold the upward-pointing strip down and the downward-pointing strip up. Fold the left-pointing strip inward, threading it through the loop created in the middle of the design. Pinch the loop created when you fold in the left-pointing strip to create a point.
-
8
Rotate the star design to the right and repeat the process of folding the left-pointing strip through the middle loop and pinching the loop created to make a point. When you finish all the sides, the star is complete.
