Instructions

  1. Model

    • 1

Decide what area of the modeling industry you are interested in. Not all of it is just fashion shots. There is makeup modeling, hand modeling and character modeling. And even within the world of fashion models there is plus size, teen modeling, mature modeling and others. Figure out what is unique about your look and commit to that as your calling card.

    • 2

Contact a professional photographer who can take portfolio shots of you. Most modeling agencies require that you have something to show of yourself before hiring.

    • 3

Submit the portfolio photos to a modeling agency that accepts work submitted by persons other than a manager or agent.

    • 4

Build up enough professional portfolio gigs and connection to get a full-time manager or agent. These people will have the savvy and connections to push you toward full time modeling work.

    Singer

    • 5

Choose a genre of music that you wish to pursue as a career. This is likely the most important early decision in a singer's career as it determines the image that he or she is selling. Think about not just what kinds of music you like, but what you voice fits. Even if you may like a certain genre, it will be hard for future managers and executives to sell you in the field if it doesn't sound right.

    • 6

Write some of your own songs if possible. Having a stable of original pieces is important in establishing you as a talent beyond just singing but also songwriting. Many artists break into the business first as songwriters and later establish themselves as performers.

    • 7

Perform at a local bar or concert venue. Look at first for open mic nights, later see if bar owners are willing to book you for paid gigs.

    • 8

Record a demo album. This should be an album of original songs. Avoid covers if this is an album you plan on selling. Profiting from another artist's work without paying royalties is illegal.

    • 9

Market yourself locally by advertising performance dates; and sell your album after your performances. Building up a following and making connections with other musicians will lead to future gigs and potential industry night gigs where music industry professionals will observe you in concert.
