Taxpayers can request a copy of their tax transcripts.

A tax transcript will provide a taxpayer with an overview of her income tax information for a year. The taxpayer can order a transcript of her tax return either by mail or over the phone. The taxpayer should use Form 4506-T to order the transcript. There is no cost for the transcript. Once ordered, it should take approximately two weeks to receive the transcript through the mail.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill out Form 4506-T. The form is very self-explanatory. Under line 6, enter the tax form that applies for your situation. This will most likely be one of the 1040 forms. Also check the box next to "Return Transcript." On line 9, enter the year of the transcript you want.

    • 2

Call 800-829-1040 to order a transcript by phone. Use the Form 4506-T you filled out in Step 1 to help you through the automated phone process.

    • 3

Mail Form 4506-T if you want to order the tax transcript by mail. The second page of Form 4506-T provides the appropriate address to mail the form. The address will depend on the state where you are filing Form 4506-T.
