Instructions

    • 1

Go through the manual provided along with the wireless PCMCIA card to check for any special instructions. For example, some cards need software or drivers to be installed before you insert the card. Follow the installation instructions given in the manual. Switch off the computer and ensure the computer is unplugged.

    • 2

Unscrew the bolts behind the CPU and slide open the covering plate to expose the motherboard inside. Do not touch any other circuit or component attached. Look for long, empty rectangular slots. These are the PCI slots, where PCMCIA card will go. Typically, they are near the portion housing the processor.

    • 3

Remove any old device that is inserted into the PCI slot. If the motherboard PCI slot is occupied with a metal filling, simply unscrew the filling from the sides. When done, insert your wireless PCMCIA card into the motherboard PCI slot, and press it a little, but be careful to not use too much force. Before moving forward, the antenna of the card should be pointed upward. Put back the cabinet plates and screw the bolts.

    • 4

Switch on your PC. The wireless card software will display available wireless services in your immediate vicinity. All the access points are named by their owners. Choose the one you know. For example, if you already have a wireless router installed at your place, just click on its name to start using the Internet.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not use unbranded products. Stick to a reliable vendor of PCMCIA cards that sells them with a manual and guarantee.

  • Check your motherboard configuration beforehand to find the right card that is compatible with hardware.

  • Be careful whenever the PC cabinet is open. Ensure that the power on the SMPS unit is off and also stay wary of the many sharp edges present inside metallic cabinets.
