How to Remove Permanent Marker From a White Board

Remove permanent marker to restore your white board's original condition.

If you wrote on your white board with permanent marker, you can safely remove it without having to replace the white board. Permanent markers are resistant to water due to the solvents used to make the ink, and the marker stain will need to be removed with a chemical that can break down the solvents. Once you remove the permanent marker stains, your white board will return to its original condition.

Things You'll Need

• Dry erase marker
• White board eraser
• Acetone
• Washcloth
• Window cleaner
• Paper towels
• Commercial white board cleaner

Instructions

1. Draw over the marks with a dry erase markers. Cover the permanent marker completely with the dry erase marker.

2. Wipe the permanent marker stain with a white board eraser. This will loosen and remove some of the marker stains.

3. Apply enough acetone to a washcloth to dampen a small section.

4. Rub the acetone onto the white board in small circular motions. Allow the acetone to dry completely.

5. Spray window cleaner onto the white board if you still notice permanent marker. Wipe the white board down with paper towels.

6. Clean the white board with a commercial white board cleaner. This will keep the surface shiny and return your white board to its original condition.
