How to Build a Moving Mousetrap Car

Building a mousetrap car teaches methods of physics.

A mousetrap car is one that uses a wood mousetrap to create a moving car. Building a mousetrap car teaches the physics of force and propulsion along with problem-solving when the care is built as a group project. Assemble the car with a few simple supplies found at hobby or hardware stores. Experiment with differently sized wheels and mousetraps to determine the optimal construction for a fast-moving mousetrap car. Larger wheels increase distance while lightweight wheels increase speed. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Wood mousetrap
  • Drill with bits
  • 4 eyehole screws slightly larger than the wheel axle
  • 4 wheels with 2 axle rods
  • 4 rubber bands
  • String
  • 4 rubber washers with a 4 mm hole

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the wire hook that holds the snapping jaw and the square bait hook from the mousetrap and discard these items.

    • 2

Drill a small hole in the corner of each width end of the mousetrap. Screw an eye-hook into each hole to hold the wheel axles.

    • 3

Purchase two axles that are 4 mm in diameter with 75 mm wheels or construct your own using these measurements. The axle should be 15 mm longer than the width of the mousetrap to fit properly.

    • 4

Fit a wheel axle through each set of eye-hooks and secure them by placing a rubber washer on each end to prevent the wheel axles from sliding. Attach the wheels to the axle.

    • 5

Affix a 10-inch length of string to the bar of the snap wire. Place a drop of glue on the knot to keep it secure. Wrap the loose end of string around the rear car axle in the opposite direction that the car will roll.

    • 6

Place one rubber band over the edge of each individual wheel to mimic the treads needed for traction.

    • 7

Lift the snap wire carefully toward the opposite end of the car and wrap the string slack around the rear axle. Holding the snap wire, place the car on the floor. Release the wire to move the car in a forward motion.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use caution when working with the snap jaw to prevent pinched fingers.
