How to Troubleshoot a GE Refrigerator That Is too Cold


A GE refrigerator that’s too cold will freeze food and liquids. Plus, items stored in the fridge will stick together. Certain foods will spoil, like fresh fruit. Energy consumption will skyrocket and the appliance will create noise, because it will be running more often than when it’s working correctly. A too-cold freezer compartment in your refrigerator can cause freezer-burn and destroy frozen items. If you have an icemaker installed, ice will clump. You can troubleshoot this problem.

  • Check the temperature control on the refrigerator. GE refrigerators use a numbering system where 0 is off and 5 is normal. The temperature-control dial is usually just inside the door and is often at the top of the cavity. Verify that the temperature dial is between 0 and 5. If it’s over 5, reduce it to 5.

  • Allow the GE fridge to stabilize for twenty-four hours.

  • Reduce the temperature-dial setting if the fridge is still too cold after a twenty-four stabilization period. Start with 4, allow twenty-four hours, and then go to 3 or 2. Allow twenty-four hours between changes.

  • Check that the ventilation holes aren’t blocked by food. The holes are at the top of the cavity at the back. They need to be clear and open.

  • Fill the fridge--GE refrigerators are designed to function correctly when two-thirds full.

  • Reduce door openings if the GE refrigerator’s motor keeps starting. The fridge is working too hard. Frequent door opening can sometimes cause frost or ice crystals on food which can be misinterpreted as freezing.
