DIY: How to Fix Dents in Drywall
Drywall is a common interior wall covering. It's readily available and affordable, and it's moderately easy to install. Drywall is also fairly durable. However, if a piece of furniture or another hard object runs into the wall, it can cause a dent in the drywall. Fortunately, these dents are easy to repair. All you need are a few tools, the know-how, and some time to make the wall look as good as new again. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Sanding block
- Coarse sandpaper
- Joint compound
- Wide putty knife
- Fine sandpaper
Instructions
-
-
1
Sand the dent itself and the wall area directly around it. This will rough up the drywall so the joint compound will stick better.
-
2
Fill the dent in the drywall with joint compound, as recommended by Aubuchon Hardware. Use a putty knife to smooth the compound out so it's even with the surrounding surface.
-
-
3
Allow the joint compound to dry. Refer to the manufacturer's directions for estimated drying times.
-
4
Sand any high spots down on the drywall repair with fine sandpaper. Prime and paint the fixed dent, or apply another finish.

Tips & Warnings
To fix a large, deep dent, first fill it halfway full with compound. Allow that to dry completely. Then, finish filling the dent with additional compound.
