How to Get a Video Game Testing Job

Save

Video game testers are an underappreciated but vital role in the video game industry. As a game tester, you will be responsible for testing everything in the game to make sure it works. Contrary to what some would have you believe, the job isn't all about playing games, drinking cola and sitting on your backside; there is a lot that goes into making it as a qualified game tester. If you need added incentive, remember this: many testers go on to hold prestigious positions in the gaming industry.

  • Enroll in open betas. If you are looking to get into the gaming industry as a tester, you will need to first have some kind of resume put together. The best way to bolster your tester resume is to enroll in open betas. Massively multiplayer online role-playing games, or MMORPGs, tend to have several betas throughout the development cycle of the game.

  • Compile your resume. Putting together a resume for a game tester position is no different than any other resume. List the games you have tested, the companies that developed them and your responsibilities while testing these games.

  • Search for companies that are hiring. Each game developer has a jobs listing page on its website that is updated fairly regularly. Game tester positions are almost always in demand, so finding companies that are hiring should not be a problem.

  • Apply for the game tester position. Send in your resume, and, should you get a call back from the developer in question, go through the interview process. Keep in mind that in addition to a phone interview, some developers will want to bring you in for an on-site evaluation to see how well you perform in a workplace environment. If they like you, you may be offered the job.
