How to Change a Chevrolet Monte Carlo 2002 Water Pump

by Don Bowman

The 2002 Chevrolet Monte Carlo is available in either a 3.4- or 3.8-liter engine. According to GM, the 3.8-liter engine was the most predominant in production, so this procedure is directed at the 3.8-liter engine. The only problem experienced with the water pump is a worn bushing and seal that causes antifreeze to leak past the bushing and out the “weep hole” on the bottom of the pump.

Step 1

Drain the radiator into the drain pan by opening the drain on the bottom of the radiator, using pliers. If the pan is clean, the antifreeze can be re-used. Close the drain when completed.

Step 2

Remove the accessory belt, using a wrench to move the tensioner away from the belt. Remove the water pump pulley, using a 13 mm wrench to remove the bolts.

Step 3

Remove the bolts that secure the power steering pump, using the appropriate size socket. Move the pump to the side. Remove the bolts that secure the water pump to the block, using the appropriate size socket. When removing the bolts, pay attention to their length. There are two different length bolts so remember where they go.

Step 4

Remove the water pump and scrape any excess gasket from the block with the gasket scraper. Wipe it clean with a clean cloth. Spread a thin layer of RTV sealant on the new water pump gasket and install the gasket on the water pump. Allow five minutes for the sealant to cure before installing the pump.

Step 5

Install the water pump and bolts and tighten the bolts securely. Install the water pump pulley and tighten the bolts. Install the power steering pump and bolts and tighten securely.

Step 6

Install the accessory belt by using a wrench to move the tensioner away from the belt as it is being installed. Relieve the pressure on the tensioner and allow it to operate. Fill the radiator with antifreeze and water.
