1
Remove any drapes that are hanging in the window, and remove the rod to use a new one. Sheer or lightweight curtains should be paired with thinner, delicate-looking curtain rods. Using thicker curtain rods would look overwhelming with the sheers.
-
2
Choose the length of sheers that would best fit the room. For formal living spaces, curtains should skim the floor. Casual rooms and kitchens look best with curtains that skim the window sill.

3
Measure the window space for the new hanging rod. The width of the pole should be 1 foot longer than the total window space. This will allow the rod to hang 6 inches past the window on both sides for an elegant and proportional style to the window.
-
4
Measure 6 inches up from the window and mark with a pencil on either side of the window. This is where the hardware will be installed to hang the curtain rod. Use a tape measure to ensure even measurements on both sides.
-
5
Install the brackets over the pencil markings. Attach the sheers to the rods by inserting the openings of both curtains onto the rod and sliding the entire panels so they are completely on the rod.
-
6
Fasten the rod to the brackets and arrange the sheers as desired.
