Save the planet one tree at a time.

Do you love the environment? Are you looking for a way to observe Arbor Day, the holiday that encourages people to plant trees? Whatever your reason, several organizations can help you with your efforts to plant a tree. Although you can plant one by yourself, planting a tree with an organization helps you celebrate what you are doing for the environment with other people. Tree planting days exist all across the world, which means that you may even want to volunteer to plant a tree abroad.

Consider planting a tree with the organization Tree People of Los Angeles. The organization is founded on the principle of planting one million trees in Los Angeles. It was founded by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa in 2006 and is in partnership with the Los Angeles Department of Recreation & Parks. Efforts are being focused on the L.A. Harbor and Northeast San Fernando Valley areas in 2010. Volunteer events that you can become involved with happen throughout the month. For instance, join the Million Trees LA Street Tree Care event to plant and care for planted trees.

If you are on the east coast, MillionTreesNYC may provide you with a quality volunteer day in New York City. It is an initiative with the New York Cities Parks and New York Restoration Project. It is a unique organization because you can suggest locations for the tree to be planted. For instance, you can request that a free tree is build in front of your apartment building. You should also let the organization know if you plant a tree on your own; you can even send a photo and a story. Submit your information on Milliontreesnyc.org to offer to volunteer for tree planting events.

Consider planting a native tree, a species of tree that is natural to your area. According to Charity Guide article "Plant a Native Tree," native trees are helpful to your area because they nurture local biodiversity, which comprises the different ecosystems, genes, species, and their abundance. Increasing the amount of native trees in your area keeps local wildlife finding food and sheltering their offspring. While you may volunteer with an organization, planting native trees in your own garden is another way to benefit the local environment too.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure to wear old dirty clothes to volunteer. Even if you live in a fashionable area, no one expects you to dress your best.
