How to Make Your Own Washing-Up Liquid

Make a green cleaner at home.

Make your own homemade cleaners to help the environment and save money at the same time. Once you have purchased the initial ingredients, you can mix up numerous batches of cleaners. Along with their environmental and economic benefits, you will enjoy the gentle-to-hands benefit of cleaners made at home. Plus, they are as efficient as store-bought brands. Enjoy the recipe that follows, but feel free to experiment a bit to get just the cleaner you need.

Things You'll Need

• 1/3-cup lemon juice
• 1 cup white vinegar
• 1 cup hot water
• 1 tablespoon salt
• 1/3-cup baking soda
• Small mixing bowl
• Large mixing bowl
• Wooden spoon
• Small funnel
• Clean spray bottle

Instructions

1. Measure out the lemon juice, white vinegar and hot tap water and mix thoroughly in a large mixing bowl. Stir with a common wooden spoon.

2. Measure out the baking soda and salt and hand-toss in a small mixing bowl.

3. Sprinkle the dry ingredients into the liquid mixture. Continue to slowly introduce the dry mixture in while stirring the liquids with the wooden spoon until all components are fully combined. (You may notice a certain amount of foaming, which is natural when combining vinegar and baking soda.)

4. Remove the spray head from a clean spray bottle by twisting its head to the left. Insert the funnel into the top of the spray bottle and pour in the cleaning solution. Reattach the spray head and squeeze to test.
