How to Clean Birkenstocks
Birkenstocks have long been a famous name in footwear. They are most well-known for leather sandals with a cork sole that molds itself comfortably to the wearer’s walking pattern. As with any type of footwear, Birkenstocks can get dirty and need to be cleaned occasionally. Cleaning is simple, but the proper method depends on the material they are made of--the traditional suede or smooth leather, or the newer Birko-Flor, Birkibuc or Eva line of sandals. Does this Spark an idea?

Suede
-
1
Brush mildly dirty suede Birkenstocks with a suede brush. In many cases, this will be all you’ll need to do to remove dirt and restore the look of the leather.
-
2
Apply a leather cleaner if stains occur, as recommended by Birkenstock.com. Rub the cleaner into the stain with a soft cloth.
-
-
3
Let the leather dry, then brush it with a suede brush. This removes more of the dirt and pulls up the nap.
Smooth Leather
-
4
Place a dollop of leather cleaner on a soft cloth. Rub it into the smooth leather, letting it sink in.
-
5
Apply leather polish (clear or a color that matches the leather) with another soft cloth. Rub this fully over the leather, then use another cloth to buff it.
-
6
Let the polish dry before wearing the Birkenstocks. Allow them to sit undisturbed overnight.
Birko-Flor/Birkibuc and Eva

7
Wipe these Birkenstocks with a damp cloth, if the shoes are merely dusty.
-
8
Apply a mild soap (such as a hand soap) to a damp cloth for heavier soil and stains. Rub this over the soiled areas. Dampen another cloth and use it to rinse off excess soap.
-
9
Allow the shoes to dry before wearing.

Tips & Warnings
The cork soles need care too. Birkenstock.com recommends applying a cork sealant to the soles whenever they lose their shine.
