Becoming a Kids Model Agent

Help young talent become well known.

Becoming a kids model agent is a career with numerous benefits. It can be a handy profession if you have kids who want to model, act and sing. They won't have to give 15 percent to 20 percent of their paycheck to someone else if you are their agent. Representing other kids can provide you with additional income too. Make sure that you have the qualities needed to be an agent. For instance, people want to be represented by someone who is thoughtful, charismatic and honest. They also want someone who has the connections to get them work.

Instructions

    • 1

Become a licensed talent agent in your state. Being licensed is important because it shows your potential clients that you are a professional. Although not all states require talent agents to be licensed, it may help you be taken seriously. Becoming licensed typically takes an application fee and an annual licensing fee. You also may need to give a surety bond, which is a bond that is taken if your contract is not fulfilled.

Scout local talent. You are not going to get big clients right off the bat. Starting out interning for an agent in your town might help you get acclimated with the types of talent you can take on to represent. If you are not interested in working for someone else, approach performers. According to Style Career article "How to Become a Talent Agent," you can find local talent in numerous places including clown suit performers at birthday parties. Going to a dinner theater is another idea to find performers.

Inform the talent that you find that you are holding an open call. Have an assistant or two available during the open call to get people's contact information and measurements. They should perform some sort of audition for you. They may demonstrate their best modeling poses, a monologue or sing 16 bars from a musical. While you may begin your agency with a large clientele, you may become more selective over time.

Secure auditions for the talent that you represent. According to Job Profiles article "Talent Agent Job Profile," you can find auditions by networking with directors and photographers. Try to get an audition for each client every month at least. Not getting auditions may discourage clients, or it may encourage them to find representation elsewhere.

Tips & Warnings

  • Using talent management software is important. It helps you keep a record of each client's contact information. You may also want to keep a Rolodex to keep track of directors and photographers.

  • Some agents have bad reputations for being shady. Being honest and forthright with your intentions may get you further and help you stay around longer.
