1
Check to see if your chosen ceramic dish has any drainage holes in the bottom (most flower pots do). If it does, plug the hole with silicone sealant; let dry according to the manufacturer's instructions.
-
2
Place a small water pump on the bottom of the ceramic dish. Run the electrical lead over the back edge of the dish and attach the hose to the hose outlet. Make sure the pump is off.

3
Obscure the pump in the bottom of the dish with decorations like rocks or crystals. Make sure the pump hose is coming up unhindered through the rocks. Insert the hose through the fountain top, so that it comes out of the fountain mouth.
-
4
Trim the pump hose so that it is flush with the fountain top mouth. Place a water plant in the ceramic dish if desired.
-
5
Fill the dish with water, right to the brim, then plug in the pump and turn it on. Even though the pump is cyclical, you will need to add water every week, due to natural evaporation. In hot weather the fountain may need more attention, as there must be at least 2 inches of water over the pump at all times when it is on.

Tips & Warnings
Fountain tops come in a variety of styles -- choose one that reflects your personal style and will go well with the overall decor of the room.
If you plan to add fish to your fountain, make sure the ceramic pot or dish is deep enough, and consider buying a pump with a built-in filtration system.
If there is a particular small statue or figurine you would like to make into a fountain top, carefully drill lengthwise through the center, so you can run the pump hose through it, and use it in place of a commercially purchased fountain top.
