How to Refinish Wooden Drift Boats
Drift boats are intended for use in rivers. They feature a wide frame, flared sides and a pointed stern. The unique design of a drift boat makes it easier to maneuver in rapids. Although sturdy, the timber used to construct the boat will eventually undergo normal wear and become susceptible to moisture damage if not properly finished. Treating a drift boat with a stain and varnish will maintain protection against harsh conditions in the water.
Things You'll Need
- 100-grit sandpaper
- Power sander
- Tack cloth
- Wood stain
- Particle board
- 2 natural-bristle brushes
- Sanding sealer
- 280-grit sandpaper
- Polyurethane wood varnish
- Painter's rag
Instructions

1
Overturn the drift boat in a spacious, well-ventilated environment. Use a sanding sponge or 100-grit sandpaper attached to a power sander to smooth over the wooden surface; this evens out scratches and worn areas while removing visible residue.
-
2
Wipe the boat thoroughly with a tack cloth to clean the sawdust. Small particles of wood will otherwise be trapped in the new finish.
-
-
3
Stir a gallon of wood stain, using a piece of particle board. Brush an even coat onto the drift boat, then leave it to cure for the time shown on the product label.
-
4
Brush a sanding sealer over the stained surface of the boat. Allow the application to air dry before sanding it with 280-grit sandpaper to create a dull texture.
-
5
Prepare a can of polyurethane wood varnish according to the manufacturer's instructions. Saturate the drift boat with the first coat using a painter's rag. Allow it to cure overnight.
-
6
Sand the first layer of varnish with the 280-grit sandpaper once again to prepare for a second application. Repeat for 1-2 more coats, but do not sand the final coat.
