You can request a copy of a West Virginia marriage license.

You can obtain a copy of a West Virginia marriage license from the state Vital Records Office or from the county clerk’s office in the county in which the license was issued. You’ll need to provide the bridegroom’s name, the bride’s maiden name and the name of the county in which the license was issued. You can call the Vital Records Office at 304-558-2931 for more information.

      Download the Application for Certified Marriage Certificate from the Vital Records Office website (see Resources). If you prefer, you can pick up an application in person at the Vital Records Office at 350 Capitol St., Room 165, in Charleston, or at any county clerk’s office.

      Complete the application form and return it by mail to the Vital Records Office, 350 Capitol St., Room 165, Charleston, WV 25301-3701. This office handles marriage records from 1964 and later.

      For records earlier than 1964, return the application to the county clerk’s office in the county in which the license was issued. (See Resources for a list of addresses of county clerks’ offices.)

      Enclose a check or money order for $12 (as of July 2010) with your application.

Tips & Warnings

  • In 1921, a fire destroyed some records. Many records are still available, but some may no longer exist.
