Decorating Kids' Rooms in Themes
Decorating a kid's room with a theme makes it simpler to choose wall color, decor and accessories. The theme should include something the child feels passionate about or something children agree on if they are sharing the room. For example, a boy and girl might agree on an ocean theme if she wants mermaids and he wants pirates. Mix neutral colors into the room's decor to make it easier to update the theme when your child outgrows the current theme or simply changes her mind. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Paint the walls in a bright, bold color that complements your chosen theme. Colors that can easily work with more than one theme such as blue, green, red or pink, are ideal, as many settings include shades of these basic hues. Paint an entire mural or scene on the wall if you have the time, budget or artistic ability. For example, a farm animal theme might include a barn, tractor, pond and grazing animals in an open field.

2
Arrange your child's furniture to show off any theme-related pieces, such as a sailboat-shaped bed for a nautical theme and to create an open space in the room for your child to play. If you aren't going all-out with the theme, consider white, black or wood-toned furniture that will easily adapt to any theme or color scheme. Pieces that serve dual purposes are ideal, such as a toy box that can double as a bench.

3
Hang wall decor on plain or solid-colored walls that play into the theme. Pictures and posters can be swapped out when the theme changes. Adhesive wall decals are another option that makes it easy to build murals or put up interactive images that become part of the decor and another "toy" for your child. For example, a planes, trains and automobile bedroom could include decals or models of streets, planes, trains and cars. Your child can play with them and rearrange them however he wishes.

4
Make the bed with themed bedding if the walls are neutral or plain. Stick to solid-colored bedding if the walls are busy or if you want to be able to transition easily into other themes. The curtains should complement the bedding.

5
Accessorize the room with themed pillows, nightlights, lamps, throws or other items. Display toys that complement the theme so they're easy to get to and add to the decor. For example, a superhero bedroom could include a variety of superhero action figures on top of the dresser, nightstand or shelves. Use horse toys for a horse theme.

Tips & Warnings
Let your children help you decide on a theme if they are old enough to communicate what they want. Encourage your children to compromise if they share a room.
Include storage bins or baskets in neutral colors or colors that complement your theme.
Avoid decorative items that pose a threat to your children. It doesn't matter how "cute" something is; safety trumps decor.
