How to Apply the Tape When Replacing Grips on Golf Clubs

Having sturdy hands on the golf club is a critical part of your golf swing. That's why it's important to keep your grips fresh. Worn grips can cause slipping, which can lead to errant shots. How often you re-grip your clubs should depend on how often you play. The process is easy, especially applying the double-sided tape, which you can do in your home.

Things You'll Need

  • Vise
  • Towel
  • Utility knife
  • Water
  • Soap
  • 3/4-inch or 2-inch double-sided grip tape
  • New grip
  • Dry-erase marker

Instructions

    • 1

Wrap the golf club shaft in a thin towel for protection. Place the toweled portion of the shaft in a vise and tighten it so the club doesn't move. Remove the old grip, using a utility knife.

    • 2

Clean the shaft using a mild soap and water. Use a towel to dry it completely.

    • 3

Measure the new grip to determine how much tape needs to be applied to the shaft.

    • 4

Mark where the new grip will end on the shaft, using a dry-erase marker.

    • 5

Apply double-sided grip tape to the shaft, leaving a 3/4-inch overhang at the end. If you use 3/4-inch tape, remove the backside of the double-sided tape and wrap it in a spiral from the top of the club to the point where the grip will end. For two-inch tape, apply it to the shaft and then fold it completely around before removing the double-sided backing.

    • 6

Smooth out any wrinkles or air bubbles.

    • 7

Close the tape at the open end of the shaft by pushing it toward the center. This will provide extra grip to the inside butt end of the grip.

    • 8

Add the new grip to the shaft.
