How to Write a Résumé for a Job in Cosmetology

How to Write a Résumé for a Job in Cosmetology thumbnail
A résumé should express your skills and knowledge as a cosmetologist.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, career opportunities in cosmetology are favorable; yet when it comes to high-end salons, you can expect strong competition for jobs. If you are a cosmetologist or if you are going to school to be one, you'll need to create a résumé that helps you stand out from the crowd when applying for work. Although the basics of writing a résumé are the same, you'll want to create a résumé that is tailored specifically for the beauty industry and one that adequately highlights your talents as a cosmetologist.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a heading. Type your first name, middle initial and last name at the top of your résumé page. Use a 14 or 16 point conservative font such as Times New Roman and bold the print so it stands out from the rest of your text. Drop a font size and add your address, phone number and email address beneath your name.

    • 2

Write out a goal statement in 12 point font. Also commonly referred to as the objective, a goal statement should express what your intentions are in submitting your résumé. Make your objectives correspond to the needs of the hiring employer. For example, if the employer is hiring a hair stylist to eventually become the lead stylist, you should indicate on your résumé that your goal is to obtain long-term employment in a salon that offers the potential for growth.

    • 3

State your qualifications as a cosmetologist. Consider what skills you possess that might give you the upper hand over other cosmetologists that are being considered for the job. Write down any distinctive working experiences, accomplishments or advanced training that you have received, such as hair coloring certification or if you've been trained to perform a new cutting technique. If you have attended or participated in hair shows or won awards for your accomplishments, document that here; include dates when applicable.

    • 4

Enter your work experience. Starting with your most recent employment, write down the name of the salon or spa, or if you have been working as a self-employed cosmetologist. Include the first date of employment and the date when employment ended. If you are a new cosmetologist with no salon, spa or other cosmetology-related work history, write down the experience that you do possess and include job duties or skills that could be related to working as a hairstylist, such as customer service.

    • 5

Add your education. Include the name of your school or college and the dates that you attended it, starting with the most recent. If you are currently a student enrolled in a cosmetology program, write the name of the school, the date that you started and the anticipated date of graduation. Include the name and dates for any additional or continued education as well.

    • 6

Include references with your résumé. These should be people who are not related to you, but have a positive association with your styling abilities. If you are a recent graduate of a cosmetology training program, ask your instructors if you can add them as references, or if you have a previous employer or co-worker who is willing to vouch for your skills, include those names and phone numbers.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep your résumé limited to one page.

  • Résumés should be clean, organized and to the point. Avoid adding loud or overly creative graphics or fonts.

  • Include a section on outside activities if they are relevant to cosmetology.

  • Use cosmetology résumé samples online as a guide only.

  • References can be made available on request if you prefer to not write them on your résumé.
