How to Apply for Welfare Assistance

Instructions

1. Call the Employment and Human Services department of your state government. It can be found in your local phone book or on your state's website.

2. Set up an appointment to meet with a case worker and attend an orientation that will help you understand your options with welfare. Discuss the available options and be prepared to answer detailed questions about your financial and family situations.

3. Request emergency assistance if you are homeless. Many welfare programs provide temporary housing or shelter for those who have lost their home and have nowhere to go.

4. Fill out paperwork given to you by the case worker and call any necessary people to obtain proper documentation that has been requested. This may include employment records from previous employers or child support paperwork. Have the paperwork mailed or faxed to you or the case worker.

5. Attend a follow-up appointment with your case worker to go through all the paperwork and determine what type of welfare you may be eligible for. This is typically when your application will be officially submitted.

6. Stay in contact with your case worker regarding any necessary paperwork, the status of your application and to complete any paperwork information if you are determined to be eligible for welfare.
