How to Become Inactive As A Real Estate Broker In Maine

Maine real estate brokers must pay certain fees, complete continuing education and meet other requirements to keep their license active. If a broker for any reason will not be working for an extended amount of time in the real estate profession, he might decide to place his license on inactive status during this hiatus.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill out a change of license application. The Maine Real Estate Commission has this form available online. The form requires the broker’s name, address, license number, contact information and date she wants the license to become inactive. If she wants the license placed on inactive status immediately, she can indicate on the application that she wants the status changed upon receipt by the commission.

    • 2

Prepare a check with a $20 fee made out to the Maine State Treasurer.

    • 3

Mail the completed application, fee, pocket card and wall license to the Maine Real Estate Commission at the address on the application.

Tips & Warnings

  • To reactivate a Maine broker's license, the broker will have to meet certain requirements depending on how long the license has been inactive. Brokers who have been inactive for less than two years must complete 21 continuing education credits while those inactive from two years but less than four must complete 28 credits. Brokers who have not worked between four and six years must obtain 36 credits. Anyone who has been inactive for over six years does not have to obtain any continuing education hours but must take the Maine real estate law exam.
